Devils need to shed salary after massive Kovalchuk deal

After landing the biggest fish in the National Hockey League’s free agency pond on Monday, the New Jersey Devils general manager will spend the next few months moving bodies around in an attempt to fit under the league’s salary cap.

Lamoriello has until opening night to work his magic after signing Ilya Kovalchuk to a monster deal that’s reportedly worth $102 million US over 17 years. Goaltender Martin Brodeur is the next closest player on the roster, pegged to earn $5.2 million in 2010-11.

Veteran forward Brian Rolston could be one of the bodies on the move — he has two years left on his deal at $5 million per season, and his cap hit this coming season is $5.062 million.

“It looks like they’re going to be over the cap, so (roster moves) that’s the only thing that makes sense,” Rolston said to NJ.com on Monday afternoon. “I don’t know what my involvement in that is going to be, but we’ll see.”

“I’m not concerned. It could happen, but it’s just part of the business of hockey,” he said. “Obviously someone is going to have to move.”

Rolston isn’t the only big-ticket Devil.

Left-winger Patrik Elias — a Devil since breaking into the league in 1995-96 — has three years left at $5 million per season. Elias’s cap hit though is the largest after Kovalchuk at $6 million.

Also likely to get thrown into the rumour mill is centre Travis Zajac (cap hit of $3.89 million this season), centre Dainius Zubrus ($3.4 million in each of the next three seasons), and veteran defencemen Colin White ($3 million in each of the next two seasons) and Bruce Salvador ($2.9 million in each of the next two seasons).

Kovalchuk, a two-time 50-goal scorer, had been courted for several weeks by the Los Angeles Kings since free agency opened on July 1, with the Devils also continuing to pursue the talented sniper. Kovalchuk, the 2004 Maurice Richard Trophy winner played out his contract and became an unrestricted free agent on July 1, also had interest from the New York Islanders and teams in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.

Kovalchuk spent last season split between Atlanta and the Devils, scoring 41 goals and 44 assists in 85 games. He had 10 goals and 17 assists in 27 games with the Devils.

The Kovalchuk signing isn’t the first big move by the Devils this summer.

The defence will sport a new look after Lamoriello signed free agents Anton Volchenkov out of Ottawa and steady Henrik Tallinder away from Buffalo. Earlier on Day 1 of free agency, the team lost standout blue-liner Paul Martin — signed away by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

New Jersey also added a former Stanley Cup winner with the Devils in Jason Arnott in a trade with Nashville in June. Arnott scored the overtime Cup winning goal in Game 6 of the final against Dallas in 2000.

A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday in New Jersey to re-introduce Kovalchuk.
