ATV Safety Could Prevent Child Deaths
Federal Officials Push for New Regulations
The federal government will launch a safety campaign today to try to drive down the numbers of injuries and deaths to people riding all-terrain vehicles.
Riding an ATV can be a dangerous trip, especially for children.
The most recent statistics show 740 deaths and 136,000 serious injuries a year.
There are about 7 million ATVs in the United States, almost 20 times more than a decade brett favre jerseysago.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said more ATVs had meant more accidents.
In Swansea, S.C., Pam and Steve Saylor visit the cemetery often.
Their son, Chandler, and their nephew are buried there. They both died in ATV accidents, nine years apart.
“For two children in our family to have died on an ATV is not a freak accident,” Pam Saylor said.
Children Ride ATVs Meant for Adults
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the biggest hazard is children riding ATVs meant for adults.
“ATVs are very dangerous,” said the commission’s Nancy Nord. “They don’t understand the power of these vehicles. There are also sites that offer criminal records in exchange for a fee. About 25 percent of the people killed in ATV accidents are children under 16. One-third of people injured on ATVs are under 16.
Dealers are not supposed to sell adult ATVs if they know they will be used by children.
In 2002, “Good Morning America” went undercover and found many dealers who ignored that industry standard.

Industry spokesman Mike Mount denied that the report was indicative of a trend.
“They could have been improperly trained or just making a bad decision,” Mount said. “But I don’t think that is the majority of salespeople in power-sports dealerships across this country.”
More States With More Laws Needed
